Last weekend’s special made the cut to be a permanent fixture on our spring menu. Eastern Washington Asparagus, marinated with lemon juice and scallion oil snuggled up on a bed of green garlic pesto from our friends @bunkhouseacres and sheep’s milk cheese from @blacksheepcreamery! Local eggs from Honeybear Farm here in Olympia are boiled then pickled with some beet pickling liquid we have been holding on to (it’s hard to toss that beautifully tart purple juice!) and some cured yolks from the same chickens to add a little salt in a different way.

The entire landscape changed during Caro’s days off so I brought her down to the wellhead to observe the full length of the destruction. I still can’t believe how easily the excavator got up that hill. *whew* Note the big rip above my right knee. The cute doggie in the third photo did that when she was just three months old. Wonder if @zurikenya can send me a repair kit.

I am not the most marginalized black person, woman, or farmer, and I try to ensure that my presence here doesn’t make those who can’t reach 15,000 people invisible.

Individuals giving me money to farm is fantastic, but it isn’t reparations. I see reparations as an engagement with a system. Supporting individuals on individual terms is an essential part of caring for humanity, a central part of liberation. Still, we cannot forget the long-standing grouse that black people and other oppressed groups have with the state.

Millions are going about their lives with no platform (or desire) to disclose the traumas and violence that they endure at the hand of their governments. Remember them. In sum, please give me all the money but don’t forget about the larger systems that create and sustain material deprivation.

My farm fundraiser hit the initial goal of $74,599 two weeks ago. I have increased the goal to $100,000 because of higher than projected expenditure on irrigation and not qualifying for a loan to purchase a cargo van to deliver CSA shares. This poem sang to my heart the first time I heard Espada read it, seated on a stage by the sea in my homeland, Jamaica, fifteen years ago. It sings to me again now that I, the daughter, sister, and granddaughter of migrant workers who have tilled this soil, am stewarding a plot of earth in my first season as a farmer. It is a pocket of justice that is not retributive but empowering.

It is a heavy weight to carry, to ensure that I am doing right by the land. That I am honoring the original peoples, who were aggressively removed. That I am completing the work of my ancestors. That I am giving my best to my communities. That I am etching a path away from capitalism. That I am finding the freedom many only dream of.

Today I let down that weight and picked up hope, because this is the year.

I approach you this morning, and every day, as the

I approach you this morning, and every day, as the descendant of enslaved African people, the daughter, granddaughter, and sister of Jamaicans whose hands have tilled a hard ground as migrant laborers on stolen American land. Now, I am in my first season as a farmer on land I steward. The significance of this inversion is not lost on me, and I am committed to doing work that is more than just symbolic.

The theme for Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth. I have spent the last nine months hard at work cleaning up the 20 acres I steward, sending trailer loads of scrap metal to a recycling facility, and assorted trash to a landfill. I am still not done with this challenging task, but each day's accomplishment is immediately visible and rewarding. I am markedly more conscious of my consumption and the waste I generate. While your situation might not be as dramatic as mine, you can take small steps every day to lighten your footprint on our planet. There are simple "acts of green" you can incorporate into your life, such as carrying reusable bags, silverware, and straws, eating more plant-based meals, composting kitchen and yard waste, and supporting local farmers. #EarthDay
